Remediation of a former oil storage and military site in Šiauliai, Lithuania
Remediation of the former petroleum storage and military territory in Šiauliai, Lithuania
- Location
- Šiauliai, Lithuania
- Year
- 2020 – 2023
- Scope
- 33 ha
- Duration
- 30 months
Project structure

Challenge
Reduction of the concentration of oil hydrocarbons in the soil and groundwater to the limit values in accordance with legislation requirements.
-
Solution
315,000 m³ of contaminated deeper soil layers were remediated using a combination of chemical oxidation, hydrodynamic vacuum extraction and ozonation. An additional 6,200 m³ of surface soil was treated in‑situ using bioremediation. Furthermore, 70,000 m³ of contaminated groundwater were cleaned, including the removal of the free‑floating petroleum product layer above the groundwater.
-
Result
The integrated remediation approach ensured the cleaning of deeper soil layers, the biological restoration of the topsoil, and the full treatment of contaminated groundwater, significantly reducing petroleum hydrocarbons in the environment and completely eliminating the free‑floating oil layer. The site was remediated to a level compliant with regulatory requirements.
