Challenge
The 330 km trunk pipeline for crude oil and oil products from Daugavpils to Ventspils crossed boggy, forested and remote areas, where accidents often occurred in hard-to-reach places far from roads. Spill sites had to be reached quickly with all the necessary equipment, and contamination had to be contained and collected in more than 250 spill incidents.
-
Solution
VentEko surveyed the spill sites, contained the contamination, applied sorbents, collected the oil products, removed contaminated soil and monitored the groundwater. Mechanical, biological and physico-chemical remediation methods were used, reports were prepared, and response readiness was maintained along the entire 330 km route.
-
Result
Between 1997 and 2006, more than 250 accidental spills were cleaned up along the entire 330 km pipeline route. The spread of contamination was contained, oil products were collected, and soil and groundwater were remediated and monitored over the long term. The environment was restored and the impact of spills on ecosystems and economic activity was greatly reduced.
