Challenge
In the liquid hazardous waste reservoirs built in Olaine in 1972, technical deficiencies led to leaks of pollutants, causing significant groundwater contamination — with pyridine and butanol concentrations thousands of times above permissible limits. The aim of the remediation project was to eliminate the open pollution source and prevent further releases of organic synthesis by‑products into the environment.
-
Solution
5,318 m³ of solid waste were removed, and liquid hazardous waste was pumped out from four waste basins. Reinforced concrete structures were dismantled, with the total volume of contaminated construction debris reaching 104 tonnes. In total, 111,449 m³ of contaminated groundwater were treated, and 10,400 m³ of polluted soil beneath the damaged Soviet‑era hazardous chemical waste basins were excavated and sorted.
-
Result
The historical pollution source was eliminated, and the emission of contaminants into groundwater was significantly reduced.
