Challenge
The sludge spill contaminated 3.5 ha of forest depression and a 220 m section of the drainage ditch, including 0.6 ha of adjacent bank area. Pollution was also detected in the Stropica River along a 3.2 km stretch up to its confluence with the Līksna River, creating significant ecological risks and requiring urgent remediation.
-
Solution
To eliminate the spill consequences, VentEko carried out a wide range of precisely coordinated actions. A total of 13,320 m³ of sludge mixture was collected and removed from the forest depression, the 220 m drainage ditch bed was cleaned, and 505 m³ of contaminated water was pumped out. Three aeration systems were installed in the affected river section to enrich the water with dissolved oxygen and reduce the impact on the Līksna River ecosystem.
-
Result
Following the remediation works, the area was stabilised and acute ecological risks were mitigated. VentEko ensured regular surface and groundwater quality monitoring to track pollutant dispersion and confirm the effectiveness of the remediation. River aeration and sludge removal significantly reduced the impact on the Stropica and Līksna river ecosystems, restoring water quality and ensuring a safe environmental condition.
