Challenge
The Kīleveins drainage ditch in Torņakalns is a historically contaminated area with a significant impact on the urban environment. Within the 4.64 ha planned remediation zone, approximately 60,451 m³ of polluted sediments containing heavy metals and petroleum hydrocarbons were identified.
-
Solution
We developed a comprehensive remediation and revitalisation programme, evaluating innovative and internationally recognised technologies and trends in urban development projects. The solution involved stabilising 26,110 m³ of contaminated sediments using modified clays and a capping method — isolating the remaining polluted sediments with 20,176 m³ of stabilised material. A full technical and economic justification was provided.
-
Result
A comprehensive remediation and revitalisation programme was developed for the Kīleveins drainage ditch, addressing the management of contaminated sediments and the long‑term sustainable development potential of the area. Thanks to our excellent collaboration with SIA “ALPS Ainavu Darbnīca”, which created the landscape revitalisation and urban design concept, the project received national and international recognition, earning laureate diplomas from the “Landscape Architecture Award 2025” jury.
